Maureen Colquhoun Bio

Maureen Colquhoun’s full name was Maureen Morf ydd Colquhoun Smith. She was born on 12th August 1928 in East bourne, Sussex, England, and passed away on 2 February 2021 at the age of 92. She was a very popular British economist And Lab our politician. She was the first openly lesbian MP (Member of Parliament) of Britain. She was raised by her Irish mother named Elizabeth Smith, in a politically engaged home.

Education and early life

She completed her schooling at a local Convent School and then joined the commercial college in Brighton and then she studied at the London School of Economics. After that, she worked as a literary research assistant. As she already belonged to a political family, she joined the Labour party in her late teens. In 1970, she contested Tonebridge at the general election than from 1971 to 1974, she worked as a councilor in Shoreham-by-sea.

Parliamentary Career

In February 1974, She was elected as the Member of Parliament for Northampton North at the general election. In 1975, she proposed the Balance of Sexes Bill with the purpose to require men and women and public bodies in equal numbers.

In late 1977, she has deselected beautiful sexuality and her feminist views. In 1978, the vote by her constituency party was overruled because her supporters appealed to the National Executive Committee who then agreed that she had been unfairly removed owing to her sexual orientation.

Then in 1979, she proposed the Protection of Prostitutes bill into the House of Commons which turn up 50 prostitutes to campaign for the decriminalization of prostitution. After that at the general election in 1979l, she lost her seat to the conservative Antony Marlow.

After the defeat, she worked as an assistant to other MPS of the Labour party in the House of Commons. Later, she was elected to Hackney London Borough Council where she served as a member of the Council from 1982 to 1990.

Then, She moved to the Lake District where she served as a member of the National park of Lake district between 1998 and 2006.

Personal Life

She married Keith Colquhoun who was a journalist in Sunday Times in 1950. But in 1973, being a mother of three teenage children, she left her husband for a woman named Barbara Todd who was the publisher of Sappho magazine. Then she divorced her husband in 1980. And Barbara Todd remained her partner until she died in 2020.
