Ruth Kelly Bio

Ruth Maria Kelly is a former British politician of the Labour Party. She served as a Member of Parliament for Bolton West from 1997 until she stood down in 2010. Earlier, she also served as Secretary of State for Transport, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Minister for Women and Equality, and Secretary of State for Education and Skills. She has served under both Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Prime Minister Tony Blair.

She was born on 9 May 1968 in Limavady, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, UK. She is currently 53 years old as of 2021.

Family and Education

She belonged to an army family as her maternal grandfather named Philip Murphy served as an officer in the Irish Republican Army and her paternal grandfather named Francis Kelly also joined Connaught Rangers and served during the First World War in France. Her father’s name was James (Seamus).

Earlier, she lived in the Republic of Ireland before moving to England and there she attended Edgarley Hall which was a preparatory school for Millfield School. After that, she completed her education at Sutton High School. Later she went to Queen’s College, Oxford from where she studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics in 1986 and graduated in 1989. After that, she went to the London School of Economics from where she earned an MSc Degree in Economics in 1992.

In 1990, she joined the Labour party and became a member of the Bethnal Green and Stepney constituency party.

In 1996, Kelly married Derek John Gadd who is a local government officer and the couple has four children.

Career

In the 1997 general election, she was elected for the seat of Bolton West from the Conservatives.

In the 2001 general election, she was appointed as Economic Secretary to the Treasury. In 2004 she entered the cabinet and got the position of Secretary of State for Education and Skills. She was the youngest woman ever to sit in the cabinet.

In 2006, she was appointed as Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. She had also got the position of Minister for Women and Equality.

In 2010, she became the Global Head of Client Strategy at HSBC and after that in 2015, she left HSBC. Then she was appointed to become Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at St Mary’s University in Twic ken ham.
