Jo Richardson Bio

Josephine Richardson is one of the well-known politicians of the British Lab our Party. She was born on 28 August 1923 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and died on 1st February 1994in Barking, London, England at the age of 70. At the time when she passed away, she was the Member of Parliament for Barking and she held that post since 1974. Her nationality was English.

Early Life and Education

She completed her schooling at Southend High School for Girls. Her father was a sales representative while her mother was a member of the Congregational Church. During the 1930s, his father stood as a Liberal Party candidate in Darlington. But he died soon when she was still young. She was very intelligent in her studies but she was not able to afford a University education and this was the thing she regretted throughout her life.

Parliamentary Career

In 1945, she joined the Lab our party and began her political career as the secretary of Ian Mikardo. After that, she united with the Keep Left Group within the party, and before coordinating the Victory for Socializing Campaign, she went on to become the secretary of the Tribune group. In 1951, she was elected to Hornsey Borough Council and became the full-time secretary of Mikar do. And also became his working partner in his business and their business involved trade with Eastern Europe. Then in 1951 and 1955, she was elected to the parliamentary seats of Monmouth. After then she contested other parliamentary seats as well which included Horn church in 1959 and Harrow East in 1964.

At the February 1974 election, she was elected as Member of Parliament for Barking and held that seat until her death in 1994. She was considered as a peace campaigner on the hard left of the Lab our Party. She was also a member of the Socialist campaign group but she resigned in 1988. Furthermore, she also served as a member of the Shadow Cabinet. And she was a central figure of the feminist left who helped women’s rights to expand in Britain and being the head of the group of women MPs, she also supported the anti-pornography position.
