Dame Eleanor Fulton Laing is a British Politician of the Conservative Party. She served as the Member of Parliament for the Epping Forest constituency since 1997. She has also served as Chairman of the Ways and Means and as Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons since 2020.

She was born on 1 February 1958 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Currently, she is 63 years old as of 2021.

Early life and Education

Laing was raised in a nearby village of Elderslie. Her father was a councilor. She completed her early education at St Columba’s School which was a local fee-paying school. Later, she went to Edinburgh University from where she graduated with a Master of Arts and Bachelor of Law degrees.

She was the first female to become the President of the Edinburgh University Students Association and she also worked as a solicitor in Edinburgh and the City of London.

Personal life

She married Alan Laing and they had one son. They got divorced in 2002. She is a fan of Rangers F.C. and she is also a vice-chairman of the Westminster Parliamentary Rangers Supporter’s Club.

Parliamentary career

She was first elected as an MP for Epping Forest at the 1997 general election. From 1999 to 2003, she worked in Opposition whip. From 2000 to 2001, she worked as an opposition spokesperson for constitutional affairs. Then from 2001 to 2003, she served as spokeswoman for Education and Skills. From 2003 to 2004, she served as opposition spokesman, home, constitutional and legal affairs. In 2005 she became Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland and also from 2004-2007 she served as Shadow Minister for Women and Equality. Then from 2007-2010, she worked as Shadow junior justice Minister. Later, from 2013 to 2019, she was the first Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means. And presently in 2020, she is Deputy Speaker and Chairman of Ways and Means.

In 1998, She supported the motion for lowering the homosexual age of consent to 16. She also criticized how the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act 2013 was introduced.
