Early Life of Sistla Janaki

S. Janaki was born in a Telugu family in Pallapatla, Andhra Pradesh. She was interested in music from a very early age & started performing at a very tender age. Janaki learned music from Sree Paidiswami, who is a nadaswaram Vidwan.

Janaki’s Singing Career

She started her singing career when Janaki was just 19 years old. She later moved to Chennai with her uncle Dr. Chandrashekar, on his advice she joined AVM Studios as a singer.

Janaki began her career in movies by singing songs which were composed by T. Chalapati Rao in the Tamil movie called “Vidhiyin Vilayattu” in the year 1957. She even performed in the Telugu movie called “MLA”. Janaki became one of the most favorite singers of Ilayaraja and started to sing at least 2 to 3 songs in every movie in all the four southern languages.

Janaki even wrote several songs for Telugu and Tamil movies. Being a famous singer, she is also a devotee of Lord Krishna and Shirdi Sai Baba. And therefore, she also recorded Hindu devotional music on Meera.

Some of her contemporaries were, Ghantasala, P. Susheela, Dr.Rajkumar, Vani Jayaram, K J Yesudas, P. Jayachandran, L R Eeswari, P. Leela, K. S. Chithra, Jency, P B Srinivas, Sujatha, and of course S P Balasubramanyam. Janaki is the inspiration for many upcoming and aspirational female playback singers in South India.

Janaki’s Personal Life

Sistla Janaki married V. Ramprasad. Janaki is now settled in Chennai and lives with her son Murali Krishna. Her son is an actor and acted in a few films and has an audio business of his own. Her son married a classical dancer named Uma Murali Krishna, a Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi performer. The couple has two daughters named Amruthavarshini and Apsara.

Janaki is also a close relative of Gari mella Bala krishna Prasad, who is a Carnatic classical vocalist.
